What could be better than mixing advanced educational training with yoga and meditation while enjoying the sweet smells of a tropical rainforest and an array of wildlife, including monkeys, sloths and toucans? Then, in between classes, being able to slip away to explore the idyllic towns, beautiful beaches and breathtaking views of one of the world’s most sought-after destinations?
That’s what a group of Master’s program students did during Antioch University’s Somatic Psychotherapy Practicum held at the Danyasa Eco-Retreat in Dominical, Costa Rica.
Over the course of this seven-day program students immersed themselves in somatic coursework/instruction with grounding exercises and mindfulness practices, deepened their experiences with relaxing Yin Yoga and nourished their bodies with an incredible spread of local, organic and delicious farm-to-table foods.
There was plenty of time between classes to lounge poolside or explore the bohemian surf town of Dominical. On a “free day” when no classes were scheduled, the more adventurous went kayaking or SUPing through mangroves, zip-lining, and ATV riding through the jungle to a waterfall for a swim. Others chose to relax on the beach or check out the local hotspots.
High points of the week included a day volunteering at the Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary, touring the facility and then helping to build enrichment items for the animals. There was also the trip to the world-famous Manuel Antonio National Park, numerous jaunts to secluded waterfalls and, of course, that time we finished our day with a mesmerizing sound bath led by Thomas and Lisa of Heart & Sound, Costa Rica’s Premier Sound Therapy Experience.
A spectacular sunset on the final day was the perfect ending to a trip that will be remembered by all for deepening their understanding of “Pura Vida” and inspiring them to take it home with them.
